University and extension students, faculty, staff, alumni and volunteers gather to promote the UM System in Jefferson City
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The ɫƵ today held its 43rd Legislative Day at the Missouri State Capitol. More than 500 representatives visited with their representatives and senators, showcased research and service projects through interactive displays and rallied in the rotunda to advocate on behalf of the UM System, its four campuses, extension and health system.
“The annual UM System Legislative Day provides an opportunity for university leaders, faculty, students, alumni, extension representatives and volunteers to illustrate the value our campuses and extension centers bring to all 114 counties and six million Missourians in the state,” Vice President for University Relations Steve Knorr said. “The large number of advocates representing the university in the State Capitol today speaks volumes to the important work the university carries out each and every day.”
University leadership and campus representatives met today with the delegation to discuss UM System’s collective legislative priorities. In addition, the UM System set up five interactive displays focused on its mission critical areas including research, teaching, service and economic development. At each display, numerous faculty members, researchers, technology transfer representatives, extension regional directors and students showcased cutting-edge innovations and technologies as well as public service projects that have been developed on the campuses and at extension centers.
The university also hosted a rally in the first floor rotunda where Lieutenant Governor Mike Parson welcomed the group. President-designate Choi participated in the rally providing remarks to the group one day prior to his first day in office.
“I appreciate how important our partnership with the state is and I am excited to be here with my colleagues to celebrate the many ways that the university contributes to the vitality of Missouri,” UM System President-designate Mun Choi said. “I have had productive meetings with many elected officials at the Capitol, including Governor Greitens and key legislative leaders. Together, we’ll shape a shared vision of excellence and create a top public research university system for the people of Missouri, the nation and the world.”
